Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Living indepentently

Understanding behaviour. Building skills. Creating safer, calmer days.

AT NOAHS HAVEN,

We believe every behaviour has a reason. Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) helps us understand why a behaviour is happening and what the person needs in order to feel safe, calm and supported.

PBS is a gentle, respectful and evidence-based approach. It focuses on improving a person’s quality of life, supporting their emotional wellbeing, and reducing behaviours of concern in positive, meaningful ways.

Our goal is simple: to help people feel understood, supported and more in control of their everyday life.

What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a specialised NDIS service that helps people who show behaviours of concern. These behaviours often happen when a person is feeling overwhelmed, uncomfortable, confused, or unable to communicate their needs.

PBS helps by:

Understanding what triggers the behaviour

Supporting the person to communicate in safer ways

Teaching new skills

Creating a calm, predictable environment

Improving daily routines and wellbeing

Supporting families, carers and staff so everyone works together

PBS always focuses on positive approaches. It is never about punishment or control — it is about meeting needs, building confidence, and creating real change.

Why someone may need PBS

A person might need PBS if they experience behaviours such as:

Physical or verbal aggression

Self-harm or unsafe actions

Property damage

Running away or unsafe wandering

Difficulties with emotional regulation

Behaviours that stop them from joining in daily life

These behaviours are not “bad behaviours.” They are signs that the person needs support, connection, or a safer environment.

How PBS Works at Noah’s Haven

  • We start by learning about the person — their needs, routines, strengths, communication and environment.
    We look at:

    • What happens before the behaviour

    • What happens after

    • What the person might be trying to communicate

    • What supports can help
This helps us clearly understand the reason behind the behaviour.

  • We create a Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) that is tailored to the person’s needs.
    This plan includes:

    • Positive strategies that support calm, safe behaviour

    • Skills the person can learn

    • Environmental changes that can help

    • Clear steps for families, carers and staff

    • Long-term goals for improving quality of life

If a person needs restrictive practices (such as a safety device or physical intervention), these will only be used as a last resort and must follow all NDIS and state rules. Our aim is always to reduce and remove restrictive practices over time.

  • We support the person to learn skills that help them communicate and cope better, such as:

    • Asking for help

    • Asking for a break

    • Using visual supports

    • Staying calm in stressful moments

    • Building daily living skills

These skills give the person more control, more independence and more confidence.

  • PBS is not a “set and forget” service.
    We:

    • Review the plan regularly

    • Update strategies as needs change

    • Monitor progress

    • Adjust routines and supports

    • Celebrate wins and improvements

We stay with you through the entire journey — not just the beginning
